Diese FAQ ergänzt bereits erschienene c't-Artikel zum Thema Web-Design. Bereits in c't behandelte Inhalte werden hier nur in Ausnahmefällen wiederholt.

Ich merke gerade, dass meine Frage eher das Thema Browser betrifft als das Thema Web-Design...

Netscape 6 / Mozilla

Seite http://x.y sieht mit Netscape 6 doof aus -- Internet Explorer, Netscape 4.x und Opera zeigen sie aber richtig an. Was tun?

• Möglicherweise ist die Seite nicht standard-konform?
• Netscape 6 wertet die DOCTYPE-Deklaration am Anfang des Dokuments aus und legt sie stellenweise etwas ungewöhnlich aus. Insbesondere bei Tabellenhöhen scheint es Probleme zu geben. Entfernen Sie die DOCTYPE-Zeile aus Ihrem Dokument und sehen Sie nach, ob das Problem dann immer noch besteht.

"Mozilla has two layout modes: quirks and standard. The quirks mode
mimics the behavior of Netscape Navigator 4.x while the standards mode aims
to comply with the Recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium. The mode is picked based on the doctype declaration (or the lack thereof) at
the beginning of an HTML document." [...]

"Some 'bugs' are intentional in the quirks mode and do not appear in the standards mode. Also, the default vertical sizing of layout boxes and the default vertical alignment of images in the standards mode as specified the CSS2 specification differs from the behavior of old browsers and the quirks
mode. When no doctype declaration is used, the quirks layout mode is
activated."

• Netscape 6 basiert nicht unbedingt auf der bestmöglichen Code-Basis. Stellen Sie fest, ob das Problem auch bei dem neuesten Mozilla-Build besteht. Wenn ja, melden Sie das Problem bitte an Mozilla.org.
• Netscape 7 basiert auf Mozilla 1.0.1 -- die Version ist deutlich schneller, komfortabler, stabiler, kurz: besser als Netscape 6. Wenn Sie irgendwie können: Aktualisieren Sie auf Netscape 7 oder die aktuelle Mozilla-Version!
