Television can be a punishment. The Linux-Cluster should not be begrudged the free advertising - but who has actually been putting up with this WDR Computerclub for over 10 years now? The two moderators could hardly have been any less inspired, more boring, disinterested and incompetent. They came up with words of wisdom like "Space travel could not be done without computers anymore", "the 25 letters of the alphabet" [the German one has 26] or "Yes, this looks very nice, please carry on" to a calligrapher who attended the broadcast for no apparent reason whatsoever.
The Crème de la Crème of German university research stays up all night in Paderborn to then have 90 seconds to answer questions asked by a journalist who obviously is not interested at all. No central theme, no connection, instead the viewers heard explanations about how difficult his job is and how much the viewers enjoyed his work - the incarnation of the loopback device.
All that was just embarrassing and uninteresting. However, Wolfgang Back owes his colleague from Deutsche Welle an apology for his behavior: After having been introduced by Back with his name and an added "Chinese", he had to endure Back's silly copycat act of his mother tongue on stage.
Hopefully most people had access to a sufficient supply of alcohol - with increasing befuddlement the whole thing could at least be endured until five o'clock in the morning. (ck)
