In a sense, these sorters are all Charles Darwin's pickers and choosers - his natural selectors. Yet they add to Darwin's insights some harsh realities. Not all selectors are elements of the exterior environment. The inner-judges, in particular, are inside our biology. Why? Because individuals are parts of a larger survival machine. And just as individuals compete, so do the groups of which we are a part. Groups compete not only with their might, but with their smarts. Each of us is a hypothesis in a larger mind. And unfortunately, not all hypotheses work out. Hence some of us are disabled by what previous centuries called a broken heart.

Computer modelers using simulations of complex adaptive systems have come to the same conclusion as that presented here. The computer modelers' terms for the properties which emerge from their simulations are "polarization" (squabbling) and "clustering" (rallying around common threads). See Robert Axelrod.
